A studio at the end of the gravel
Lil’ Smoky Studio is one of the cabins run by Stony Brook Cabins, set well east of downtown Gatlinburg where the strip gives way to hardwood forest. A gravel drive curves through the trees to a small, dark-stained cabin with white chinking, a steep-pitched roof and a short flight of steps to the door. In season, mountain laurel flowers in the surrounding woods.
The best thing about the location is a short walk away: a lake framed by trees on common grounds shared with neighbouring cabins, with a wooden gazebo and a stone fire pit on its bank, and a ridge showing beyond the water. The cost is the drive. Ripley’s Aquarium and the Space Needle sit around ten miles west, so a night on the Parkway is an outing. For something simpler, a diner and a pizza place are a couple of minutes down the road.
One room, done in pine
This is a true studio: one open room of pine walls under a vaulted, beamed ceiling. The bed shares the space with a stone-faced fireplace, a TV on its mantel, a pair of upholstered armchairs and a granite-topped kitchen counter, with a separate private bathroom off to the side and a back door out to the trees. The kitchen has an oven and stovetop, enough to cook proper meals rather than just reheat.
There’s a hot tub, WiFi, air conditioning and free private parking on site, and pets are allowed, though charges may apply. It’s a well-kept, warm little room — the kind of place a couple actually uses rather than just sleeps in.
Priced beyond its footprint
Be clear about the size. Everything happens in a single room: there’s no separate bedroom, no loft and no sofa bed spelled out, so this is strictly for two, and two people who are happy in close quarters.
The nightly rate is the other catch. It lands in upscale territory for a studio — you’re paying for the finish, the hot tub and the lake setting rather than space. Add the steps to the door and the drive for every meal out, and it’s a poor fit for anyone who needs step-free access or wants to walk to town. For a couple after quiet evenings by the lake, it delivers; for anyone weighing value per square foot, its bigger Stony Brook neighbour makes a stronger case.
