A tower of decks above the trees
Birch Lodge doesn’t sprawl, it climbs. Seen from outside, it’s a tall timber house stacked floor on floor on a wooded Gatlinburg hillside, with covered decks level after level and rocking chairs looking out across the treetops. The views run to forested ridges rather than a single named peak, and you’ll see other homes scattered across the slopes — this is a neighbourhood on the mountainside, not a clearing to yourself.
The upside of that address is convenience. Downtown Gatlinburg, Ripley’s Aquarium and the Parkway are a short drive away, a pancake house and a couple of other casual spots are minutes from the door, and the national park is close enough to fit a hike in before lunch.
Built for a big group’s rainy afternoon
The headline is the pool room: an indoor swimming pool in a bright space painted with a mountain mural, with a hot tub raised on stone at its edge and a little waterfall spilling from one into the other. Glass doors open straight onto the deck, so the forest is right there while you swim. A sauna rounds out the spa side.
Elsewhere the lodge keeps the crowd busy. There’s a game room with a pool table and arcade cabinets, a dark movie room with a big screen, recliners and bean bags, and a living room of leather sofas pulled up to a stone fireplace under a wall of windows. The kitchen is a proper one — a stone-topped island with bar stools, a big stainless fridge, oven, dishwasher and coffee machine — and there’s a washer and dryer for longer stays. The bedrooms we saw are warm, pine-panelled rooms with rustic log-frame beds.
The stairs and the bathroom queue
Size is the point, and it’s also the catch. Five bedrooms and room for eleven sounds generous until you notice there are four bathrooms, so someone is always waiting at peak hours. And a house built upward means stairs: inside and out, you’ll be climbing between levels all stay, which matters with toddlers, older relatives or heavy bags.
It’s also a professionally managed rental, run by a large operator rather than a local owner, so expect a polished, consistent setup more than a personal welcome. For a couple, all of this is too much house. For a group that wants to swim, play and watch films without leaving the property when the weather closes in, it’s hard to find a better-equipped base this close to town.
