East of town, among the hardwoods
Bear Necessity is one of the cabins managed by Stony Brook Cabins, and it sits on the eastern side of Gatlinburg, where the woods take over from the strip. The photos show a gravel drive running down through the trees and a covered porch that looks straight into hardwood forest, with a ridge visible through the branches. The national park lies close on this side of town.
The calm comes at the price of a drive. The aquarium and the Space Needle are about twenty minutes away by car, so the Parkway is an outing rather than a stroll. For something simple, a diner and a pizza place are a couple of minutes down the road.
A king loft above a compact living room
At roughly the footprint of a large apartment, the cabin is one open living space with a loft above. Outside, the hot tub sits beneath the porch roof, which makes it usable on a wet evening, and the porch adds Adirondack-style seating facing the trees. Pets are allowed, though charges may apply, so check the pet terms with the manager.
The trade-offs of a small cabin
The listing allows up to four guests, but the only bed it spells out is the king in the loft. Two people will be comfortable; for a third or fourth, ask the manager where they would sleep before you book, because the photos don’t show a second bed.
The loft is open to the room below and reached by stairs, so there’s little privacy from the living area and no ground-floor bedroom for anyone who struggles with steps. And the nightly rate sits at the upscale end for a single-bedroom cabin — you’re paying for the new finish, the covered hot tub and the quiet rather than square footage. For a couple who want exactly that, it’s an easy recommendation; for anyone who needs space, look at a bigger cabin.
